Search Engine Submission
Where do I submit my site? It's a common question and most people end up with a search engine submission service that uses automated software to submit their site. I'm not saying this tactic is useless, but it's not the best way to promote your site.
It takes some time but submissions performed manually are often more likely to actually get listed. A good practice is to do the important submissions manually, then follow up later with a good quality submission service.
First, check your pages! Are they optimized? If not, start by making certain your pages are optimized for your keywords and ready for submission.
Second, get some links coming into your site. Most crawler based search engines (like Google™ and Ask™) will find and index your site quicker by discovering a link to you than through a submission.
It doesn't hurt to submit to as many search engines as you can find. Smaller search engines and directories that are not considered as "major" or "top" can still account for good quality traffic. And having them link to your pages will count as incoming links to your website. The more incoming links you have - the better your chances are of being found and indexed by Google™ and other major search engines.
List of places to submit and search engine submission costs:
| Name | Add URL | Cost | Notes |
| Open Directory | Free | Submit here first and be prepared to wait indefinitely - their backlog is huge. Find the appropriate category and click suggest url. Open Directory powers the results for many other search engines and directories. | |
| Google™ | Free | You can use the submission page but the best way to get listed with Google™ is to build links to your web site. | |
| MSN | Free | Crawler based engine - check to see if your site is indexed..if not submit it. | |
| Yahoo Directory | $299 annually |
An excellent place to be listed for the value of the inbound link to your website and worth the cost if your budget allows. Go to the directory and find an appropriate category, click suggest URL. | |
